The movement towards electronic credentials started with an industry partnership between Truckstop.com and AIM Transfer and Storage – an industry partnership that ushered in the establishment of electronic credentials for the transportation industry. This created the first working group task force for electronic credentials with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WIDOT) and Wisconsin Law Enforcement.

The eCredentials Working Group Task Force developed a successful pilot program that expanded to Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, some Illinois enforcement agencies and Canadian Provinces. As of 2024, electronic permits have been authorized for all mainland U.S. states.
